In most cultures, dessert is the final course of a meal that is usually a sweet dish or drink. In India, sweets are an important part of all festivals, functions or any happy occasion. Most Indian desserts include milk or ghee as its main ingredient. Some of them are also made with fruits and nuts. If we are visiting south india a sweet item is often the first item to be served in a meal during house warming, weddings or birthday celebrations.
Here is a some of Indian desserts that you can try and enjoy. The list includes some of the best classic North Indian and South Indian sweets that have been made for many many years. so lets take a look..
First we are talking about Brij region (Region around Mathura and Agra) which is famous for it’s sweets. So the sweets that one must try are:
Ghevar
This sweet has it’s origins in Rajasthan but is equally popular in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. It looks like a “Beehive” and there are basically two types of Ghevar which are Plain Ghevar and Malai(Cream) Ghevar. Toppings comprise of dry fruits, saffron etc. It is a lip smacking sweet and in my region comes around during the time of festivals of Rakshabandhan and Teej.
Plain Ghevar
Malai Ghevar
Another mouth watering delicacy of Agra is Gajak or at few places it is called Chikki. Gajak can be a different types one of them is coconut Gajak and a Gajak which is a mix of melon seeds, almonds, jaggery, makhane(Euryale Ferox) is made up around Janamashtami(Birthday of Lord Krishna). also call it Paag but I believe it can be clubbed in the category of Gajak.
Agra’s Gajak
In some other city of india gajak is totally different in look and taste also, lets take a look some of other gajak which is also famous in winter days. mostly people loves to eat gajak in winter days and also we can say winter festivals.
Rasgulla
Rasgulla is a syrupy dessert, indian sweet dish popular in the Indian subcontinent and regions with South Asian diaspora. requires only three basic ingredients (milk, sugar and lemon juice) which are easily available in any kitchen all the time.
Kopra pak
Kopra (kopru) means coconut & Pak means sweet dish (roughly). Main ingredients of the dish are coconut & khoya (mava/khoa). Someone has mentioned ‘petha’ & ‘cham cham’ . I like all sweets of WB & Agra region, but they are too sweet. 🙂 that sometimes you stop eating it. You can eat kopra pak in more quantity at a time. 😉 Just because of coconut flavor.
